Tasting Ruffino Prosecco

Ruffino Prosecco
Name: Ruffino
Variety: Prosecco
Region: Northern Italy
Country: Italy
Year: Not listed on the bottle
Price: $12.69

Wine Review: "Ah… the hard working, humble Prosecco. At $12 a bottle, it’s affordable enough to drink mixed with some fruit juice. Poured into a flute it’s still classy enough to celebrate certain occasions.  Perhaps that’s why I urge most people to keep a bottle of two of Prosecco in the fridge. This is the adult’s soda, with no high fructose corn syrup.  In fact, this extra-dry-labeled Prosecco has very low levels of sugar. It’s still sweet though, a Brut style sparkling wine this is not.  At first sip, you get a nose of citrus and a taste of green apples. Fine bubbles tingle your taste buds. The aftertaste is just a tiny bit bitter to be my go-to Prosecco." (Drinkbigapple.com)

My review: This wine was terrifying to open because it is a champagne-esque drink, so it was one of those where the cork pops out and some of the beverage spills out right after opening.  It had a strong alcohol smell, but I did like the carbonated aspect.  It was sweet without being too strong.  My assessment of this wine was that it was glorified sparkling water with an alcoholic taste to it.  There were no fruit flavors or otherwise strong personalities in the wine.  Wikipedia states that Prosecco is a “less expensive substitute for champagne,” which is something I would have to heartily agree with.

Food: I had this wine with plain potato chips and onion dip.
