I have never blogged before, so
this will be a pretty new experience for me.
Geography of Wine not only interested me because it is a “must-take”
class, but also because of what little experience I have with wine. My main goal in taking this class is to further
my understanding of different wines and hopefully find a wine that my fiancé
and I both love so that we know what to serve at the wedding next October. I also hope to use this as an excuse to take
some day trips to wineries this semester.
To begin, I suppose my range of
preferred taste in wines is rather small.
I have not come across a red wine that I enjoy, and my taste in whites
is limited pretty much to a specific brand of Riesling I tried once at a
wedding expo. I have tried a few
different wines, from Double Decker Pinot Grigio (my grandmother’s favorite
wine) to some sort of peach green tea infused white wine (instead of champagne
for New Years’) to mystery box wine (at a house party). To me, this isn’t enough knowledge of wine to
feel like a classy adult.
Something that interests me about
the study of wine is the idea that many cannot tell a taste difference between
cheap and expensive wine, and just all alcohol in general. My go-to German Riesling is about $11 per
bottle. I would be interested in finding
out if there are any other bottles I might like around the same price, or if
price doesn’t even factor into taste at all.
I look forward to seeing if wine is something I can grow into, or if I
will forever feel iffy about it. We
shall see!
